Which Animal Is For Me? Article I decided to write a long article about my experiences with animals we have had the pleasure of keeping. Of course nobody can ever be an expert on any animal species because they really do teach us new things all the time! However, it is easy to google the facts if you wish to know what size and what type enclosure an animal requires. You can find diet details easily enough. What is NOT easy, is getting a really good idea of what an animal is 'like' to live with if you have never met one. So if you are wondering which animal is right for you, it could be worth a read. | We keep both Emins Pouched Rats & Gambian Pouched Rats. These guys are truly amazing - growing up to 3ft long and over 3kg in weight, these magnificent giants are highly trainable and capture the hearts of anyone lucky enough to keep one. They are trained to clear land mines in Africa by sniffing them out and signalling their presence so that mines can be safely deactivated. We are privileged to have owned 7 Emins and 3 Gambian Pouched Rats to date and never stop learning. We have been researching their diet, health and breeding and will continue to do so as there is much still to learn about their basic care in captivity. There are so few keepers and even fewer breeders, so we decided to start a Registry and Info site last year as thankfully, more breeders stepped forward to help with trying to work with this species which sadly, are not at all easy to breed. We are glad to see Gambian Pouched Rats becoming more available, slowly but surely. Sadly, our beloved Emins Pouched Rats are much, much rarer and all breeding attempts have failed so far. We continue our long search for more Emins Pouched Rats to add to our ongoing breeding project. Click on the logo above to go to our APR Registry site where there are many links to superb information. You can also join our Exotic Keepers Forum, above, which has a whole area dedicated to Pouched Rats. |

| CARE GUIDES It is important to research the needs of an animal before you commit to buying a new pet. You will need to know how to feed a healthy diet, what the animal can live in happily, any specific health issues you should be aware of and any other species specific info relating to behaviour and general care. You can find many care guides and articles written by experienced keepers by clicking the button below. If you are below 18 you should get an adult to help you with your research as your parent or guardian would have to take responsibility for your pet until you are 18 years old. |
Why Are Pets Good For Kids? The Society For Companion Animal Studies shows that pets are good for children in a variety of ways including physical and emotional health. The Society showed that pets helped children with their social and emotional development, promoting good self esteem as animals eliminate the fear of rejection. SCAS studies showed that children often confide in their pets and could relate to animals better than humans. Children are thought to be born with an urge to be caring and pets help to encourage and nurture these empathy and caring skills. Pets were shown to offer emotional support to children in transitional times such as family illness, breakdown and even adolescence. It has been proven that pets make healthy kids. Babies exposed to pets during the first year of life develop stronger immune systems and suffer less with asthma and allergies. Children with pets were also seen to have higher exercise levels. Children who have developed healthy bonds with animals are more empathic as adults and are able to transfer these nurturing and social skills to their interactions with people. Lucian is now two and started to show an interest in the animals around him from about 10 months old. He enjoys stroking and feeding animals very much and loves to watch rodents inside their tanks. He can often be seen talking to animals and many of his first words were animal's names which he learned with very little or no encouragement from ourselves. Also with no help at all, he learned to mimic different animals. He can copy a rabbit and a chicken. Also to our surprise, one day when a wolf appeared on tv, Lucian let out this sweet little howl - it was very cute although we have no idea where he learned to associate wolf with howl. The video below shows me filming tiny baby skunks. You can see Lucian reach for one and pick it up, just like it's mother would do. This was the very first time that Lucian picked up an animal by himself. Click HERE to go to the Kids Fun page for more. |

CENSR is a registry controlling lines of many Species with the object of conserving a nucleus in captivity which are bred for genetic diversity. Species which dip in popularity and would normally risk dying out in the UK due to breeders stopping producing young when they cannot easily place the offspring are looked after by CENSR, ensuring that where possible, these Species do not disappear and continue to be maintained. CENSR utilises ID Codes and colour coding to track relatedness of the animal's ancestry. Click Here For More |
